To Infinity And Beyond Coldfront
I have been hanging around the Infinity tables for longer than I should have. Watching the games go on, people moving miniatures and prompting "got any arrows?" While this was incredibly confusing to start with, something about the game hooked me. I fought with myself for weeks and weeks about should I / shouldn't I?
Make sure you read until the end, weâve got a little treat for all of you Infinity fans.
Doing what most people do as a last resort to convince themselves that they don't want to get into a game. I chose a faction and asked the local Infinity and gaming groups to see if anyone wanted to split a starter box, hoping no-one would take me up on the offer as it would leave me with no option but to start the game. One great thing with Infinity is that they have a large variety of starter sets allowing you to pick up one for most of the factions in the game. You are gaining access to the rulebook, acceptable quality card terrain and some D20 Dice, everything you need to play the game.
One of my co-workers piped up and said: âsure I'd take the Aleph from Operation Coldfrontâ and that sort of sealed it. Time to start Infinity! Army building is a relatively large part of any war game, but with Infinity, there is a downloadable army builder. I've had a look at the different options available and what the best way would be for me to pick up a 300 point army that also provides some flexibility.
I've built my army, got my shopping list so what's next? Well, I've picked up Operation Cold Front and got my Ariadna half of the box, so it's time to start some hobbying.
Managing to get some of the Aristea models with the Infinity miniatures while undercoating them and trying some wet blending techniques on the sword.
Working with metal again reminded me why I like the material so much. It's much easier to manipulate metal parts to get them to sit perfectly than it is with resin miniatures. While these miniatures are not as easy to assemble as Games Workshop Miniatures, with their easy to build range, they are more straightforward than Wyrd Miniatures plastic kits. These are relatively beginner-friendly miniatures, but as you will have to use superglue, I ended up sticking my fingers together a couple of times, make sure to be careful while glueing the figures.
Playing The Game
So now it's time to actually get to the gaming table. I've been building my lists for a while, tinkering with what to include. For my first game, we went with 200 points, this was actually a lot more restrictive than expected. ITS Tournaments are played at 300 points
The army builder for Infinity [https://army.infinitythegame.com/] is free and has a supporting App, so it is definitely worth a look.
My first game was very short. I deployed questionably and learned very quickly that unlike other games I'd played, deployment in Infinity is one of the most important things to learn. My first activation was to move my three-person team of Line Kazaks, which caused my opponent to react by firing a missile launcher at the group and kill all three. At that point, I reached across the table and shook my opponent's hand. I needed to learn that lesson as itâs the most significant change between Infinity and other game systems.
The second game, however, was much closer. After using my Tankhunters Adhesive launcher to cover my opponents' missile launcher in a non-lethal glue that took him out of the game, I managed to ambush in my Spetsnaz with boarding shotgun and take out 3 out of 4 members of his link team.
After a few more turns of back and forth, I finished the most enjoyable "first" game of any new system I've ever played. I didn't spend any of the game bored and was engaged throughout the whole process looking to see if I had got any sneaky ARO's on my opponents' moves, the choice to idle my reaction against his movements to avoid revealing my positions.
My next purchase is going to be the Beyond Coldfront box and that will give me the 300 point list to run in the local ITS tournaments. We have a very strong Infinity community down at the Wayland Games Centre Hockley, so if you ever fancy it, pop along on a Tuesday and grab a game. Take a look at some of the other miniatures below.
