Painting Tutorial - Kingdom of Britannia Escort Ship

BY HAYDN

As I love the idea of enemy navies being confused by this curious 'dazzle camouflage' pattern, I decided to make a little tutorial on how to paint this curious camouflage on the ships of the Imperial British Crown. I chose not to use an airbrush or stencils, so painters of any level can replicate this striking colour scheme.

Start by spraying the model with a black undercoat.

Paint the hull with Dark Reaper (Citadel), the metallic parts with Gunmetal Metal and Polished Gold (Vallejo) and the wooden deck with Mournfang Brown (Citadel). I also used some Intense Blue on the windows (Vallejo model color).

Now apply a generous wash with black ink all over the ship except the gold areas which receive a Sepia wash. I used Nuln Oil and Seraphim Sepia respectively.

For the first highlight of the hull mix a little Morrow White (P3) with Dark Reaper and blend it onto the panels.

Add a little more Morrow White to the previous mixture and highlight the hull panels even more.

With Stone Grey (Vallejo) start to draw the dazzle camouflage across the ship. Use a few thin layers to try and get an even texture.

Go over your camouflage design and the ship’s top rim with Morrow White.

Apply some shading with watered down Thamar Black (P3) around the bolts and the rivets, and the divisions between each panel. Also highlight the gold with Polished Gold again.

Pick out all the rivets you shaded I the previous stage with Morrow White.

Highlight the wooden deck with Skrag Brown (Citadel).

Finish the model by painting all the metal parts with Silver (Vallejo). Mix some Morrow White with the Intense Blue you used for the windows and highlight the top corner of each one...

and you’re done!

Have a go yourself and show me what yours looks like!
