October's Staff Painting Competition: Fears & Phobias and Rainbows
With our previous competition, Monochrome and X-Punk, being a memory of recent past, we wanted to give our staff a challenge beyond their creative scopes. As we enter into a time where leaves begin to turn yellow and eventually depart from their homely trees, the temperatures bring us chilly mornings, and the sun begins to fade earlier in the day, painters had the opportunity to bring back the happier vibes of summer with the Rainbows category. And, like always, the entrees didn’t disappoint! Ranging from bright hues in an ombre fashion to multicoloured miniatures, the choice was tough for the judges.
Rainbows
In First place…
We have Ben W’s Lord of Change, who blew the judges away with his imaginative use of colour for the wings and body of the mini!
In Second place…
Here’s Becca H’s Rainbow Mushrooms! Adding a sense of whimsy to nature, despite Britain’s mushroom scene being mostly brown!
In Third place…
The final place goes to Andrew H’s Noise Marine! With steampunk vibes and a rainbow mohawk, it deserved a place in the top three.
And finally, for People’s Choice…
We have Jessica H’s Rainbow Dreadnaught, with impressive use of shading and for making this mini look like a graffiti project.
Fears & Phobias
Outside of the expansive Rainbows category, painters were encouraged to face their inner terrors with the Fears & Phobias category to go in like with the Halloween spirit of October! In a month full of spooky celebrations, traditions of horror films, and warding against evil, what better time to bring spine-chilling minis to the table?
With an overwhelming entry to this category, the judges certainly had a hard time deciding the winners. And without further ado, here they are!
In first place…
We have Richard F’s Black Spider! Its hyperrealistic paint was enough to strike fear into anyone who laid eyes upon it! With arachnophobia being so common, this mini deserved first place!
In Second place…
Murun T’s Pumpkin Spider! Merging Halloween with spiders is a terror as old as time, and the oranges of this mini caught the attention of the judges.
In Third place…
Andrew H’s Daemon Prince! This Age of Sigmar miniature deserves its own phobia with its terrifying teeth and glare!
Honourable mention to people’s choice…
Jessica H again with her Opie from Wild West Exodus! This colourful mini was still spooky enough to catch the eye of the people!
Well done to all who entered! Your efforts and participation deserve recognition!
And that rounds up the famous Wayland Staff Painting Competition! Did you think the winners were justified? What mini would you have preferred get podium?
